Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration
Depending on how old you are, or how well-read you are, this may be your second go-around with Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin. The original series, published in English by Viz, ran between 1994 and 1999 and was comprised of 28 volumes. Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration is not a sequel to that original story, but rather a two-volume reboot of it, created in 2012 in order to compliment the live action film. For those who have read the first incarnation, this is like Rurouni Kenshin Fast Forward, but if you've never experienced the manga version of the franchise, these two books make a fine introduction.
Rewriting the first arc of the longer series, Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration opens with an unassuming swordsman being mistaken for someone else. Unscrupulous businessman Takeda Kanryu is trying to scam young swordswoman Kamiya Kaoru out of her dojo by forcing her to perform in staged sword fights. He has hired a thug to play the infamous killer of the previous era, the Bakumatsu, to take the young lady down a peg, but his minion, a troubled boy named Yahiko, mistakes the mild-mannered wanderer for him. Unbeknownst to all, this man is actually the real Hitokiri Battosai. He has recreated himself as a rurouni, or wanderer, in order to atone for his many bloody sins during the turbulent Bakumatsu, and has vowed never to shed blood more. He finds himself taken in by Kaoru, both literally as she brings him home and figuratively as he becomes emotionally invested in both her troubles and those of Yahiko. Before he quite knows what has happened, Himura Kenshin has a place in the Kamiya home and a purpose in making sure that the young of the Meiji era can live the life he fought for.
This, of course, necessitates some revocation of his vow. Takeda is a vicious villain, determined to get what he wants no matter what. There's an interesting line between he and Kenshin, however – in the peaceful Meiji era, Takeda hires others to do his fighting for him, relying on his own commercial prowess to hire the best. Kenshin, on the other hand, is the product of countless actual battles, and his idea of what needs to be fought for is based in an ideology that essentially died with the previous era. This is coupled with genuine care for those he's fighting for, which sets him apart from Takeda's goons and indicates that he will be able to survive in this new time, while such foes as former Shinsengumi fighter Jin-E, who cannot shed his old philosophy (or love of blood and pain) cannot. This also makes the character of Saito Hajime, another old Shinsengumi member who becomes a police officer, an interesting statement, although he gets barely any development or page time in this new version.
The bulk of the character development goes to Kenshin and Yahiko. It is a little disappointing to see Kaoru lacking in that department, but with only two volumes, one supposes that Watsuki had to pick and choose, and Kenshin and Yahiko do both show the way the times have changed, with Yahiko being young enough that he would have missed almost all, if not actually all, of the Bakumatsu. Old readers of the series will see that Kenshin now sports a scarf and has more internal monologue, the latter of which makes him a bit more accessible as a person. He refers to himself as “this one,” which is a nice touch and speaks to his feelings of unworthiness and shame, although it does make it a bit odd when he uses “me” or “my” rather than keeping it entirely in the third person. The rest of the text uses modern idioms (ie “what's up?”), which again is a little strange with Kenshin's general speech patterns, although I suppose that it could be argued that this emphasizes the differences between eras.
Watsuki's art is more refined than in even Busou Renkin and certainly has come a long way since he first drew Kenshin. He comments that it is no longer easy for him to draw Kenshin's bushy hair, but all of the characters are still recognizable and look rather better than they used to. Villains retain their cartoony air both in appearance and in personality, although both of those things disappear when the situation warrants it. Backgrounds are very detailed, giving a firm sense of place, and there's a real grace to the way Kenshin moves, particularly in Watsuki's drawings of feet. Most impressively, in the intervening years, Watsuki has learned to, or become more comfortable with, drawing action scenes, so there are no longer simply huge sound effects and faces when there's a fight on.
Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration is either a nice way to revisit old friends or a good, easy introduction to the story, at least in its manga form. Watsuki provides a lot of notes about how he went about redoing the story, and the new Episode 0, somewhat strangely the last chapter of volume one, helps to set Kenshin's emotional stage. If you like a historical story with sword fights and a firm foundation, or if you just want to see how Watsuki reimagines the first arc of his best known work, this is a good series to check out.

Bleach's Genryūsai Voice Actor Masaaki Tsukada Passes Away
Bleach voice actors Masakazu Morita (Ichigo Kurosaki) and Keiichi Takahashi (Tōdō Gizaemon) reported on Wednesday that fellow voice actor Masaaki Tsukada had passed away. Tsukada was 74 when he passed away on Monday, January 27. He had been under medical treatment for illness for some time.
Tsukada's many roles include Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto in Bleach, Toto in One Piece, Kobayashi-cha in Prince Mackaroo, Kiichirō Kimiyoshi in Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai, General Grumman in Fullmetal Alchemist, Yutaka in Hoka Hoka Kazoku, Wang in The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Gorō Tashiro in Showa Monogatari, and the Chairman in Yumeiro Pâtissière. He also dubbed Steve Kahan's character Captain Murphy in the Lethal Weapon films into Japanese. He was married to voice actress Masako Nozawa, who will be his chief mourner during his memoral services this weekend.
Morita said that he was at a loss on what to do, after the news of Tsukada's passing reached him. He remembered how Tsukada would always affectionately call him "Ichigo" instead of "Morita" at the recording studio for Bleach. He also remembered Tsukada's always smiling, bright personality, even though he would carry an air of dignity when he assumed the role of Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto.
Takahashi remarked that Tsukada was in poor health and highlighted Tsukada's roles of Genryūsai in Bleach and Toto in One Piece. He added that Tsukada's voice was quite marvelous with a gentle dignity.

7 Characters With Insatiable Appetites
Taking down alien threats, saving local ecosystems, and being a pirate can really work up an appetite. This is especially true if you're a strong, burly shonen anime hero fighting to save the world. A guy like that needs more than your wimpy 2,000 calorie diet.
7. Hei (Darker than Black) The otherwise emotionless assassin Hei cares about two things: his sister and eating absurd amounts of food. While masquerading as a Chinese exchange student, Hei is seen confusing waitstaff with his giant orders of food and devouring more bowls of ramen in one sitting than most would eat in a year. Hei eats the most when he's mentally stable, a rare occurance for a contract killer.
6. Squid Girl (Squid Girl) Ika's two goals in life are to punish humanity for polluting the ocean and spend the rest of her days eating shrimp. She more or less achieves the latter goal when the would-be ELF member ends up working in a restaurant. Besides the day-to-day responsibilities of repaying her debt, Ika enjoys eating as much shrimp as possible for a humanoid squid and taking it upon herself to relieve customer's of their food orders, too.
5. Goku (Dragon Ball Z) In Goku's case, you can't throw out an adequate Kamehameha blast without consuming enough energy first. Goku will easily clear a whole table of food and his son's appetite isn't anything to scoff at, either. Goku's need to eat is so overpowering he has attributed losing fights to opponents because he was hungry. Is this really surprising coming from a series where majority of the characters are named after food?
4. Fuu (Samurai Champloo) Samurai Champloo's petite female lead would be the last person you'd expect to enter an eating contest. In fact, the only reason Fuu didn't win was because of incorrect signal to the competition's judge. Fuu's metabolism is also scary-fast and she quickly drops her newly added weight before the episode ends. The entire scene is pretty funny and Fuu's new appearance has the serendipitous side-effect of confusing some pursuing thugs.
3. Bolt Crank (Eat-Man '98) Bolt's appetite isn't so much insatiable as it is really, really weird. Not an "I like to eat pickles and ice cream" weird, but "I eat machine parts" weird. Bolt's undiagnosed pica disorder allows him to swallow things like screws and reassemble them internally. The item then emerges from some place on Bolt's body and is used to take out a bad guy or otherwise get out of a tricky situation.
2. Monkey D. Luffy (One Piece) Luffy's stomach is as stretchy as the rest of his Devil Fruit-enhanced body. The Straw Hat crew's captain will easily empty out any unsuspecting restaurant's pantry and is known to "sleep-eat". The guy even adjusted his wardrobe to cargo shorts in the Enies Lobby Arc just so he could carry meat in the pockets, his preferred source of energy.
1. Toriko (Toriko) Engorging himself on rare ingredients is just one part of Toriko's rugged manliness and ongoing quest to refine his palate! One of the world's expert hunters, Toriko abides by the creed "If I don't want to eat it, I will not kill it. If I kill it, I will eat it! That's my rule!" and will proceed to eat to the point of immobility. All of his culinary endeavors are in hopes of creating the perfect menu, filled with only the rarest and tastiest ingredients.

The Art of Cosplaying
Cosplaying is hard, but well worth the effort when hanging out in your awesome outfit on the street or at a convention. Most people think cosplaying is just for acting like an anime or manga character at anime conventions, but the truth is, you can pick the perfect anime cosplay!
- First, decide who you want to cosplay. Do you just want a costume to wear around town, for fun, or do you want to wear it to an Anime Convention or other big event? If it's your first time cosplaying you may want to choose a character with a simpler outfit, however, if you do not mind strange stares and/or possible harassment, then feel free to go all out. For the latter, any costume will work, although unique costumes are more likely to stand out.
- Decide how you want to go about getting your costume. Consider your budget and time allowance. If you're short on time, making your costume from scratch may not be the best idea. Keep in mind that makeup and getting the perfect hairdo (regardless if it's your own hair or a wig) also takes time.
- If you have decided a character/person to cosplay and choose to make the costume yourself; it's a good start to make a list of what you have to make, how you shall make it and what you need to buy in order to make it. For example, if your character is wearing a jacket and pants; what color are they? Which kind of fabric should you use? Are the clothes baggy or tight?
- No matter if you buy the costume, you probably have hair, make up and maybe even lenses to buy and fix. Study your characters hair, eye color, and shape of face. Shall you use a wig or not? How should you style your hair? What kind of make up would be fitting and make your face look more like the character? Do you need colored lenses? It would be a good idea to read a little about how to change the shape of your face with make up. Don't forget props.
- It helps to sketch up your character from different angles. It gives you a good view on how the character really looks. Write up your measurements on the sketch and try to figure out what the costumes measurements should be. If the character has any props, a weapon or just a bag for example, sketch them up too.
- Decide how much time (and money) you should spend on making the costume. The more difficult and detailed the costume is, the more time you'll need to make it. Give yourself more time than you think you need and be really realistic. Also, give yourself a little extra time to fix any eventual mistakes. It's better to have it done early than to have an unfinished costume. Decide in what order you should make everything you need.
- Practice on the make up, putting in and taking out the lenses and fixing your hair (or the wig). It will take time to make it good, so be patient and try different methods and products.
- When everything is done, put everything on and look in the mirror. Do you look like the character/person? If no, try to figure out why and consider making some changes. It's a good idea to ask a friend or someone else you trust if you look like the character and what you could change. Tell them to be honest, that's why you're asking.
- Be confident cosplaying. If you want, you could practice poses the character does a lot. You could also study the way the character walk and/or move, and try to imitate it. It's completely optional.
- Make your grand debut! Whether you're walking around town, at a party, or a convention, make sure you're having fun with it!
- Have fun with it! If you don't have fun, you're not cosplaying the right way!
Cosplaying our favorite characters is fun, especially when we have a group of friends who also loves cosplaying although it can be a little expensive due to the materials needed and a lot of effort is also needed, so I hope that the steps above can help you guys on how to cosplay without spending a lot of money and meeting a lot of cosplayers.

Fairy Tail News
Relaunch of TV Anime Fairy Tail with Entirely New Character Designs to Begin in April
Hiro Mashima’s popular manga Fairy Tail, which is serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine is returning to TV once more. The broadcast of this reboot will begin this April on TV Tokyo and other networks. The anime adaptation of the work began in October 2009 and ran for three and a half years until March 2013. A movie titled Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Priestess was released in August 2012. Each adaptation of the work has been extremely popular.
Due to the TV series going on hiatus in the middle of the Grand Magic Games arc, there are surely many fans who were worried if it would return. Now, not only is this long-awaited work returning, it’s returning as a relaunch of the series. While the story will pick up where it left off, even those who are just jumping into the series will be able to enjoy it. Differing from the previous anime, the relaunch is a tag team effort between A-1 Pictures and Bridge. On the staff side, Shinji Ishihira and Masashi Sogo will both reprise their roles as director and series composer, respectively. New to the staff is character designer Shinji Takeuchi who has worked on Gintama and Ixion Saga DT.
During the seven-year absence of Natsu and the others, Fairy Tail, which has become Fiore Kingdom’s weakest wizard guild, aims to win the Great Magic Games, a festival in which the strongest guild will be decided. The new anime will pick up at this point. A fight for the bonds between friends and a story of the wizard guilds is about to begin.
Currently, the staff is working hard to finish the anime. Look forward to even more information to come.

The wraparound jacket band on Sui Ishida's 10th Tokyo Ghoul manga volume is announcing on Friday that an anime adaptation has been green-lit. More details will be revealed in future issues of Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump magazine.
The suspense horror/dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious "ghouls" who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him, at the café he frequents. Little does he realize that his fate will change overnight.
Ishida launched the manga in Weekly Young Jump in 2011, and the manga sold about 1,666,348 copies last year to be the 27th top-selling manga series. The manga has now sold about 2.6 million copies. Weekly Young Jump posted a special promotional video for the manga last July.

Monster Monpiece is Coming West [Update]
A while back I listed out the games I really wanted Idea Factory to start bringing stateside. I put Monster Monpiece in the “Most Likely to Be Localized” category because I believe the battle system had something unique enough to bring over. Lucky for me, it will be brought over. The game is a collectible card game mixed with tower defense strategy mechanics. You build a deck full of fighters and proceed to use them to attack and defend in a 3×7 grid.
It works well because your deck has the ability to level up. I’ve included the trailer above to showcase exactly how that leveling system occurs. For those at work, I caution you that it gets a bit risque. Because of this, Idea Factory had to address the issue by informing us that they “have made the decision to cut several Monster Girl images from the North American and European versions of Monster Monpiece. This decision was made solely due to the intense sexual nature of Monster Girl card images. We’d like to emphasize that the gameplay, game system, and storyline are still fully intact.”
I know some purists are going to be upset by this fact, but it is pretty obvious that this would occur to get the game over here. The system still looks interesting and I can’t wait to try it out in the Spring.

House of 1000 Manga - Lady Snowblood
Lady Snowblood
Snow, darkness, women, swords: Lady Snowblood's biggest mark on America was the fight scene at the end of Kill Bill Vol. 1. The heroines face off in a snowy backyard, spraying sparks and spilling blood, and it's a ghostly parallel of a scene in Lady Snowblood. Even the fact that it's obviously filmed on a sound set, like the film, only makes it more manga-like; as unreal as Kazuo Kamimura's artwork, as ritualistic and dead-serious as a play. Of course, Quentin Tarantino was influenced by the 1973 film adaptation, not the original manga, just like how Shogun Assassin inspired a wave of American samurai-themed films in the 1980s. And both Shogun Assassin (aka Lone Wolf and Cub)and Snowblood are based on manga written by Kazuo Koike, the most prolific, wild, influential men's mangaka of a wild and violent decade.
Like Lone Wolf and Cub, it's the tale of a master assassin in old Japan. Yuki is Lady Snowblood, an swordswoman and killer (in Japanese she's Syurayukihime, "Hell Snow Princess", a pun on Shirayukihime,
"White Snow Princess" aka Snow White). Beautiful, young and mysterious, she accepts missions of murder and sabotage, charging top yen for her services. Unlike the scruffy drifter Oogami Itto in Lone Wolf, who is like a human tank and pretty much obviously trouble from the moment you look at him, Yuki uses subterfuge and disguise. When she meets clients, she keeps her eyes downcast, her speech incredibly formal, traditionally 'womanly'. ("It is not right for me to ask your master's audience without first introducing myself.") But in battle, she's deadly, somersaulting through the air, slashing men's throats out, getting her target even if she's nude. (She occasionally ends up nude, but she isn't always nude, unlike, say, Kekko Kamen.)
But like Oogami Itto (and unlike, say, Golgo 13) Yuki has a goal beyond killing for profit; she pursues a secret mission of REVENGE. As we soon see in flashback, Yuki was born in prison. Her mother was Sayo, a prisoner serving a life sentence. Her father was unknown; Sayo had slept with any man she could find, monks or prison guards, because she needed a child to carry out her dream of REVENGE. Years earlier, Sayo's husband and son had been murdered, and Sayo had been raped, by a vicious gang of four criminals. Sayo herself managed to kill one of the men, but in return, she was captured and sentenced to life in prison. "I'm a life prisoner. I won't be able to get outta here alive. But my baby—she can leave right away. I'll have my baby deliver my vengeance after I die!" Sayo dies in childbirth, leaving Yuki in the care of one of the other prisoners, an old woman. Before she expires, Sayo makes the woman promise to tell her daughter about her mother's sacrifice, and train the daughter into an instrument of her mother's grudge.
And so the bloodshed begins. But despite the famous fight scene from the movie, Lady Snowblood actually has relatively little fighting; although her sword mastery is never in doubt, Yuki's technique is more brains than brawn. Yuki uses allies: a friendly priest, a gang of pickpockets, a gang of beggars. They don't help her in fights, but they provide logistical support and help her track down her prey. She has numerous skills, from art to disguise to thievery, and she doesn't always end things with murder if there is another, better way to ruin her target's life. In one story, she poses as an artist and sells her skills to a brothel owner to draw beautiful paintings on his fleet of rickshaws…but, in one of the manga's best twists, the paintings themselves prove to be as deadly as a sword. She poses as a Buddhist monk, as a nurse in a hospital, and in one story, as a fancy Westernized lady with a hat and a petticoat.

Open up a random page of Lady Snowblood and an American reader is likely to think it takes place in the samurai era, but actually, the story takes place in the Meiji era, sometime in the 1890s. In one chapter, Yuki spies on her target using a telescope from the top of the Ryôunkaku, Tokyo's first skyscraper. Like in Lone Wolf and Cub, Kazuo Koike mixes historical fact and fiction, giving the manga an educational gloss. Unlike Lone Wolf and Cub, in Lady Snowblood there is a strong sexual focus to these factoids. The story takes place almost mostly in the Yoshiwara brothel district. A story about photography, a relatively new invention at the time, hinges on the production of porn. A story about rickshaws focuses on rickshaw sex, the Meiji-era equivalent of sex in a taxi. (Koike Historical Note: "The reason behind the extreme popularity of the jinriksha was the car sex.") As if Koike could predict the future, there's even a story about "bamboo ladies," basically a Meiji-era equivalent of body pillows, although without Kudryavka Noumi screen-printed on them. The sex focus is certainly based on Koike's own interests, and perhaps also on the fact that the manga ran in the men's magazine Weekly Playboy. Of course, sex is timeless, but it's hard not to get the impression that Koike is expressing 1970s-era sexual fixations in historical trappings: porn, women in prison (amazingly, that's one of the least exploitative story arcs), rape-and-revenge. Koike's manga are like '70s exploitation flicks, except his manga were so influential, it's hard to tell who was copying who.
Of course, in any historical story the author picks and chooses what they focus on, and another area Koike focuses on is the encroaching influence of the West. The Meiji era was a time when Westernization and 'modernity' merged and clashed with traditional Japan; reformer Arinori Mori at one point advocated making English Japan's official language, and in 1884 Yoshio Takahashi, a Japanese eugenicist inspired by Western racist eugenics movements, wrote an essay proposing mass-scale crossbreeding between Japanese and white Europeans "to improve the Japanese race." Koike calls out these extremes as examples of "Westernization gone mad," and Yuki's assassination skills are the solution. One storyline involves the Rokumeikan, a European-style dance hall which was controversial for hosting such decadent Western practices as male-female ballroom dancing. (Of course, actual prostitution was totally kosher and legal in Japan at the time.) Wikipedia writes "its image as a center of dissipation was largely fictional", but to Koike, it's an "indecent house of promiscuity" where couples dance till they drop and then bone on the floor, and Yuki is hired to destroy it and kill some big-nosed white guys in the process. Westernization isn't the Big Bad in all the stories—in one, a sympathetic businessman tries to fund a Western-style panoramic painting in Tokyo—but Koike isn't above playing to Japanese nationalistic sentiments and insecurities. Yuki tempts one of her victims by wearing exotic Western underwear: "It's called 'bloomers.' It's the undergarment worn by the Westerners." Another chapter ends on a cliffhanger of Yuki captured and menaced by a man whose penis is so enormous he's never been able to have sex. Her captor reveals his dream is to have enough money to go to the West and find a woman big enough for him: "If I travel abroad, I can find women bigger than me! I'm gonna save money and go to the land of the Caucasians!"
Call him sexist, misogynist or both, Koike is Persona Non Grata for how women are treated in his manga. Given his track record, it's almost surprising that in Lady Snowblood Yuki is never sexually assaulted and her body is relatively rarely exposed. (Perhaps a recognition that Kamimura isn't the sexiest or best draftsman; indeed, the manga reads better for its composition and patterns rather than individual objects; it's not about bodies or shapes as much as about areas of black and white, darkness and blood and snow.) Yuki is threatened with rape, but she always gets out of it at the last minute (or second) without sweating too much, and ultimately retains agency over her own body. In one of the very first scenes, in an interview at a brothel, a client protests that her price of 1,000 yen is too high for an assassin of unproven skills. Yuki instantly whips her sharp steel hairpins out of her hair and, without looking behind her, flings them dead-center into two dildos on a shelf. (Koike Historical Fact: "Every brothel, without fail, has a family altar that enshrines a bell and two penis-shaped ornaments.") The client pays up. You don't need to be Sigmund Freud to get the message. In another story she uses the cover identity of a traveling dildo saleswoman.
Of course, Yuki is a cold, steely object in other ways as well; she's the 1970s version of what would become the female robot archetype, the Dark Angel type, the coolly sexless/inhuman superheroine/assassin. The Count of Monte Cristo, the guy in Old Boy, even Ogami Itto, were originally semi-ordinary people driven to inhuman extremes in pursuit of revenge, but Yuki is a sword forged for one purpose, sworn to revenge since the day she was born. "In a way, I'm a phantom of my mother, not her daughter…I am a vehicle of retribution who roams in search of my mother's sworn enemies…I was born into this world as a vessel of the Kashima family's revenge!" Of course, there is no doubt or hesitation involved, no question that Yuki would resist devoting her life to a mother she never knew. Perhaps absolute self-sacrifice was considered even more appealing in a female character than a male one. Like a lipstick-rather-than-butch version of Oscar in The Rose of Versailles, Yuki is basically a sworn virgin who lives asexually, taking the "manly" role of killing and kicking ass and taking names. Her pseudo-asexuality is typical for a woman in a leading role in a men's manga; the straight male reader both lusts after Yuki and projects himself onto her. Given her sympathetic starring role, Yuki is spared most of the abuse that Koike's other female characters suffer because, if she suffered that abuse (or heaven forbid, actually felt mutual attraction for a man), male readers might feel it too. Or worse, get jealous. Most of the sex in Lady Snowblood is lesbian sex, usually but not always depicted as predatory in the stereotypical fashion (although for that matter, all the straight sex in Koike's manga is predatory too). Instead of being raped, it's Yuki who, in two or three storylines, rapes other women, or commands a man at swordpoint to rape them.
It's a fairly short manga, at only four volumes, all translated by Dark Horse. There are few continuing characters other than Yuki, and no other continuing young female characters; although Quentin Tarantino upped the stakes all Queen's Blade style by having badass Uma Thurman fight equally-badass Lucy Liu and Daryl Hannah, Lady Snowblood never really fights any female opponents (at least none worthy of mention). Perhaps that's why it didn't run longer,or perhaps Kazuo Koike just got tired; like many of his manga, the ending of Lady Snowblood is fairly abrupt, although it does have an ending and doesn't just stop like, say, Path of the Assassin. It's a fascinating, sleazy, violent tour of the Meiji Era, as Yuki hacks and slashes her way through Japan in pursuit of her goal.
One of Koike's greatest strengths as a storyteller is his willingness to go off on tangents. Towards the end of Lady Snowblood, a strange plot thread intrudes; Yuki seeks out 'the wanderer,' a bearded old novelist, and tells him the story of her life. The old man writes a bestselling novel about her—a newspaper serial, a very Meiji Era medium—and Yuki's enemies read the novel, which freaks them out so much they come out of hiding, just as Yuki planned. It's a fabulously odd ending, and appropriate too: Yuki, formerly the female protagonist, becomes the model for a story written by a man, cleaning up the old man's studio and stripping naked to model for the artists drawing the illustrations. How could it get more meta? The ending of Lady Snowblood leaves some room for a sequel, so in 2006 Koike returned to Lady Snowblood with Ryoichi Ikegami as artist, creating the (untranslated) Lady Snowblood Gaiden. I haven't read it yet, so I don't know how it is, but the fact that it only lasted one volume isn't a huge endorsement. But the ending of the Lady Snowblood movie, the very last scene, is just fine.

HappinessCharge Precure
The first commercial for this year's new Precure television anime, HappinessCharge PreCure!, aired during Sunday's episode of the current Dokidoki! Precure anime. The ad introduces the two main lead characters, Cure Lovely/Megumi Aino voiced by Megumi Nakajima and Cure Princess/Hime voiced by Megumi Han. Haruka Tomatsu and Naoko Matsui will also play Cure Fortune and the fairy Ribbon, respectively.
In the story, the Illusionary Empire led by Queen Mirage has begun attacking Earth. The Precure teams that are on every continent of the world fend off the rampaging Saiaaku, and word spreads on global television news about the Precure girls who fight for humanity. "Precure" becomes a well-known word throughout the world.
Hime, the princess of the Blue Sky Kingdom that was invaded by the Saiaaku, fled to Japan. Hime was ordered by the Blue Sky Kingdom's deity Blue to fight as a Precure girl, but even though she became a Precure girl, she simply fled. Blue advises Hime to look for Precure friends, and gives the Crystal of Love. With this crystal, one can be led to a partner. To the shy Hime, this is a convenient item. However, Hime has no idea how to use it, and she lobs the Crystal of Love, saying, "Whoever this hits is my friend!" As it turns out, the crystal strikes Megumi Aino….
Cure Fortune is an aloof Precure girl whose true identity is unknown. With her strong sense of duty and excellent fighting prowess, she can take on wave after wave of the Saiaaku enemies by herself.
Ribbon is an aide to Hime and the partner fairy to Cure Lovely and Cure Princess.
The weekly series will premiere on Sunday, February 2 at 8:30 a.m. on ABC, TV Asahi, and affiliates.

Live-Action Ghost in the Shell Project Signs Up Director Rupert Sanders
The American film production company Dreamworks has signed up Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) to direct its planned live-action film adaptation of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell cyber-police manga. William Wheeler (Hoax, The Reluctant Fundamentalist) has written a new script for the project.
Jamie Moss (Street Kings, Last Man Home) was originally signed to script the film when Dreamworks announced its license in 2008. Dreamworks hired Shutter Island writer and executive producer Laeta Kalogridis to draft the film in 2009. She wrote in March 2010 that she would "turn in a draft in a few weeks." Kalogridis also reiterated in 2010 that her script for the live-action film would be based on Shirow's original manga and not Production I.G and Mamoru Oshii's animated movie adaptation.
Variety reported in 2008 that Universal and Sony also negotiated for the rights, which the Production I.G anime studio was pitching for the manga's original publisher Kodansha. What turned the dealmaking in Dreamworks' favor was co-founder Steven Spielberg's enthusiasm for the project. The entertainment trade newspaper quotes the acclaimed director and producer: "Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite stories. It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to Dreamworks."
Avi Arad (formerly of Marvel Studios as well as of the Spider-Man and X-Men movie franchises), Arad's son Ari, and Seaside Entertainment's Steven Paul brought the project to Dreamworks and will produce.
The American arm of the manga's original Japanese publisher Kodansha began reprinting the manga in 2009 after Dark Horse Comics had the license. Kodansha also launched two new manga series based on director Kenji Kamiyama's Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex television anime series that year. In addition to Oshii's two films and Kamiyama's two Stand Alone Complex television series and spinoff feature, the Shirow's manga also inspired the current Ghost in the Shell Arise prequel anime.

Magazine: Attack on Titan Has Video Game Planned
Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine indicates console plans in addition to current social game
The official Twitter account for the Attack on Titan manga revealed on April 30 that there is a console or portable video game planned for sale.
A follower had asked the people in charge of the manga at Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine's editorial department about whether they are looking into game adaptations. In their reply, they noted that the company Strategy & Partners already launched a social game, Shingeki no Kyojin -Hangeki no Tsubasa- (Attack on Titan: The Wings of Counterattack, pictured below), on the GREE mobile platform. They added there are plans to sell a console or portable video game, although they cannot talk about the details.
Hajime Isayama's manga series depicts the battles between humans and the giants who now rule the world outside humans' walled enclaves. Isayama launched the series in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009. The manga has become a sleeper hit, and Kodansha USA is publishing it in North America.
Both Funimation and Crunchyroll are streaming the ongoing anime version as it airs in Japan, and a live-action film version is slated for this year.

Shingeki no Kyojin Live Action Sneek Peek
On Friday, the Daily Sports newspaper posted the first photograph from the Subaru Forester commercial created in collaboration with next year's live-action Attack on Titan film. The commercial will debut during this evening's Kinyōbi Road Show! (Friday Road Show!) movie airing.
Shinji Higuchi, the 48-year-old director of the live-action Attack on Titan film and The Floating Castle (Nobō no Shiro), also worked on the commercial. The commercial features three Titan giants, including one regular Titan and one female Titan played by stunt people and enhanced with computer graphics. It took four hours to apply the female Titan's makeup.
In addition, the commercial filmed a model of a colossal Titan's upper body. The model was about two meters (about six feet) tall and required seven people to operate.

In the commercial, a Forester sports utility vehicle "skillfully dodges" the attacking Titans. The 30-second commercial costs several tens of millions of yen (several hundred thousand U.S. dollars). NTV's morning television program Zip! aired a segment (pictured above) on the commercial.
Principal photography on the live-action film itself has yet to begin, and the staff has not decided if the Titans in the film will appear as they do in the commercial. Still, Higuchi was grateful for this "welcome opportunity" to create a preview of what is to come.
Higuchi is scheduled to begin shooting TOHO's film this summer. He worked as a storyboarder for the Evangelion television series and the three reboot films, and he served as assistant director on Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise. He has also served as the special effects director for the Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera 2: Advent of Legion, and Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys films.
Yuusuke Watanabe (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, live-action Gantz, Gantz II: Perfect Answer, 20th Century Boys, Gatchaman) is writing the script. Film critic Tomohiro Machiyama, who is friends with original Attack on Titan manga creator Hajime Isayama, is also working on the scripts together with Isayama and Watanabe. Isayama himself has been present at business meetings for the film and has offered ideas on the scripts and characters.
The manga has inspired four spinoff manga, and a 25-episode television anime version aired last year. Isayama launched the series in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009.

Senta Filmworks Licenses "Wizard Barristers"
HOUSTON, January 22, 2014 – Time to bring out the smoking gun and work some serious courtroom magic in Sentai Filmworks' latest acquisition, Wizard Barristers. This 12 episode supernatural action thriller is directed by Yasuomi Umetsu (Mezzo DSA, Galilei Donna), with scripts by Michiko Itou (HENNEKO, Day Break Illusion) and animation production by Studio ARMS (Elfen Lied, Queen's Blade: Rebellion).
When the laws of magic are broken, someone's got to enforce them, and that duty falls to the deadly men and women of the Police Department's Section 1. However, even the most malevolent mage has a right to a fair trial, and defending those craven mavens and nefarious necromancers in court is the job of the Benmashi, the Wizard Barristers. It's a tricky profession, requiring both arcane ability and a judicious sense of jurisprudence, and at just 17, Cecil Sudo is not only the youngest Benmashi at the Butterfly Law Offices, she's the youngest one ever! That won't stop her in her duty to defend the alleged adepts and prestidigitating perps, but it's going to mean long hours burning the midnight brimstone, summoning up summaries, parsing phrases with paranormal paralegals and cutting deals with opposing counsels from hell. And when a young Benmashi starts to discover that her OWN potential to charm is more magical than she realized, there'll be hex-tra incentive to start working wonders outside the courtroom as well as in it! Prepare to be beguiled as the most enchantingly Adept Attorney ever makes her case in WIZARD BARRISTERS!
Wizard Barristers will be available soon through select digital outlets with a home video release to follow.

One Piece Strong World review
Strong World, the latest in a long line of One Piece films, has the distinction of coming from the pen of mangaka Eiichiro Oda himself. While this doesn't give us a story that fits comfortably into the basic storyline (although it doesn't feel totally random either), it certainly makes this a fun movie that stays true to the characters and the general feel of the pirate epic, and really, no one can come up with weird laughs or monsters quite like Oda. He's particularly on his game with that last one – while some aspects of Strong World are lacking visually – some of the monsters mimic stop-motion animation (also known as claymation) in their movements and distance shots are clearly below par – the same cannot be said for the creatures' appearances. From the crazy grinning bunny-wolf to Billy, the peaducken (that's peacock/turkey/duck to you) who has electrical powers, these are inventive animals who never get old. They also all survive, for those who are worried; post-credits images show all of our animal pals alive and well, despite what earlier scenes may have led us to believe.
The story of Strong World takes place sometime between Thriller Bark and New World. The crew is complete up through Brook, old character designs are used, and the ship is the Thousand Sunny. The Straw Hats are sailing along when Nami mentions that islands in East Blue are getting attacked with some regularity. Since most of the original crew hails from there, there's a lot of concern, particularly from Nami about her sister Nojiko. As they discuss going to check it out, a floating pirate ship passes above them. In the midst of being fascinated, Nami senses a major storm brewing and warns the flying ship's captain. He just happens to be notorious bad pirate Shiki the Lion, a man who once cut off his own legs to escape prison. Shiki is so impressed with Nami's skills that he kidnaps her and spirits her away to his floating island empire. As anyone who knows Luffy will guess, this does not sit well, and the Straw Hats immediately set out to effect a rescue.
